Canine Adaptability Index assessment tool.

The Lincoln Canine Adaptability Scale (L-CARS) is the first validated, reliable tool to assess the ability in dogs to ‘bounce back’ following adversity and dogs vary in their ability to cope with stress. These traits have predictive validity for a range of problem behaviours and should give you greater insight into your dog.

Usage

1. As a clinical tool to evaluate and describe the adaptability and behavioural flexibility reaction a dog has to a specific stimulus.

2. To improve the management of problems relating to the dog’s ability to bounce back from adversity/ exposure to stressors and the ability to handle and adapt to change.

3. To monitor the dog’s capacity to tolerate/withstand disruptions, with the ability to maintain composure during challenges.

4. In the screening of shelter dogs at the time of relinquishment, or working dogs to predict their need for remedial intervention.

The tool

L-CARS is a 15 item questionnaire using a 5 point Likert scale (plus a N/A answer).

This is the first canine ‘resilience’ scale. It consists of two components: one describes “Adaptability/behavioural flexibility” and the other “Perseverance”, which are also described in the human literature on resilience.
